Ron Paul

What do you all know about Ron Paul (the presidential candidate)? I had only heard him dismissed as a wacky Orwellian conspiracy theorist on some conservative websites and radio shows. But his website is pretty interesting. He's a former OB/GYN that is very pro-life. He supports school choice and vouchers for private schools and tax credits for teachers, and is probably the only candidate that even mentions home schooling on his website. He really emphasizes border control.
I'm not sure I agree with his very anti-war, isolationist ideas, but otherwise his statements really resonate with me. It doesn't look like he really stands a chance of winning, but hopefully there will be enough support to influence and shape the policies of whomever does get the Republican nomination.

I don't know much about him either. I have read bits here and there. He is a strict constructionist--meaning he is all about the Constitution. So, a lot of conservatives have issues with him because he won't address issues like same-sex marriage and abortion, saying they are outside the realms of the Constitution. Still, interesting guy. For a former poli sci major I am woefully ignorant about politics these days.

Here are some useful websites and articles: I'm not good with computers so I don't know how to make a link in the comment box:

His official website is ronpaul2008.com

To know where he stands on issues without interruptions a great video to watch is on youtube. Type in Candidates @ Google: Ron Paul. This is the video that informed me and my husband on his stances and you get to know his personality.
After that video, while you're still in youtube watch some clips from the past Republican debates. My favorite is the one where he responds to Mitt Romney's answer that a president should consult with his lawyers before declaring war on a nation.

Ron Paul has studied Austrian economics for over 30 years. Visit the Mises Institute's website for more information.

Another interesting article is Thomas Woods' An Open Letter To Catholics on behalf of Ron Paul. Thomas Woods wrote The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History which can be found in the CHC catalog as well as How The Catholic Church Built Western Civilization.

I'd also like to clear up the GOP's misconception of Ron Paul being an isolationist. He is a non-interventionist which means he believes in commerce and friendships with all nations, entangling alliances with none.

Also, the reason it looks like he's trailing in the polls is because the polls are inaccurate. Most polls get their numbers from republicans who voted in the last primary. Most of Ron Paul supporters fall into 3 categories: a)republicans who never voted in a primary, myself and dh included b)republicans too young to vote in the last election c)democrats, libertarians and independents who are now registered to vote republican just to vote for Ron Paul.

Ron Paul has won most of the straw polls and on National Caucus Day he won with over %50 percent of the Republican vote. Furthermore, Ron Paul has broken 2 records for online fundraising by raising 4.3 million in a single day on November 5th and on December 16th he broke his own record by bringing in more than 6 million dollars. That is more money than the past record holder which was Kerry the day after he won the democrat nomination. What's even more amazing is that the Ron Paul campaign had nothing to do with the fundraiser, it was organized by grass-roots supporters.

Ron Paul has an impeccable voting record. Known in Congress as "Dr. No" Paul has never voted to raise taxes and never voted for an unbalanced budget. Lobbyists don't bother knocking on his door because he has never accepted incentives. He does not participate in the lucrative Congressional pension program because he does not think it is fair to taxpayers. He does not believe in big government. He IS pro-homeschooler, unlike the other candidates, especially Mike Huckabee (HSSLA is obviously ignorant of Huckabee's voting record, why else would they be endorsing him?)

I can't write enough good things about this man. The funny thing is he has been called a "kook" by the mainstream media because he adheres to the Constitution. Sorry this is so long, but I hope my post leads you to learn more about him.

I worry about him running as a third party candidate, and handing the election to the Dems, just as Perot handed it to Clinton..

R.P is the leading candidate in our house. We don't normally vote Republican, but he is a TRUE Republican and that sits well with us.
